Why the same lot size means different risk on a live account and a prop firm account, and how to size trades on your own money without a firm's loss limits.
In short: on a prop firm account, the firm's daily and maximum loss limits force you to size small. On your own account, nothing does. Size from a fixed percentage of your real balance, set your own loss limits, and expect your positions to be much smaller than on a funded account.
Many traders learn position sizing on a prop firm account, then open a live account and carry the same habits across. The formula is the same, but the account behind it is very different. This guide explains what changes and how to size trades on your own money.
Position size comes from three numbers: how much you are willing to lose, how far away your stop is, and what one pip is worth.
Lot size = risk in dollars ÷ (stop in pips × pip value per lot)
On EUR/USD, one standard lot is worth about $10 per pip. Risking $100 with a 25-pip stop gives 100 ÷ (25 × 10) = 0.4 lots. Our guide on how to calculate pip value covers other pairs, and the pip value calculator does the maths for you.
A funded account might be $100,000 of simulated capital. A first live account is often a few hundred or a few thousand dollars. Risking 0.5% of $100,000 is $500; risking 0.5% of $2,000 is $10. Copying your funded lot size onto a small live account can mean risking 20% or more on a single trade.
A prop firm closes the account when you hit its limit. On a live account, the only limits are the ones you set. Write down a daily loss limit and a maximum drawdown before you place your first live trade, and stop trading for the day when you reach it.
Your broker sets the maximum leverage, but you decide how much to use. Sizing from risk per trade keeps effective leverage low automatically. See TradeLocker leverage for how it works.
If you trade more than forex, our independent partner Clarity Tracking has a multi-asset position size calculator for forex, stocks, crypto and futures. If you also trade a prop firm account, Clarity Traders, another independent partner, has a drawdown calculator that shows a funded account's loss limits in dollars.

The same percentage is a reasonable start, but many traders go lower on their own money at first, because there is no firm's limit to stop a bad day.
Use smaller position sizes, such as micro lots (0.01), rather than tighter stops. A stop placed for the size you want, not where the trade is wrong, gets hit more often.
